Dr. Richard "Rick" D. Smith, 67, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2019, at his home in Marion. Rick was born on October 30, 1951, to the late Dwight and Margaret Smith. He graduated from Washington High School in 1970 and then went to college to pursue degrees in x-ray technology, nuclear medicine, and eventually graduated from IU School of Optometry in 1988 as an Optometrist. He also earned his pilot's license in 1982. He enjoyed skydiving and said that skydiving was less scary than earning his pilot's license, as he had to fly three individual legs completely solo before he finally was licensed. His fondest memory of high school sports was when he scored over 40 points in one basketball game. He enjoyed writing and authored many inspirational books. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and was comforted by his Catholic faith.
Rick is survived by his friend, Carolyn Smith; sister, Janis (Scott) Brown; and nephew, Josh Finatri.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In accordance with Rick's wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be buried in Washington, Indiana, where he was born and raised. His final resting place will be Sugarland Memory Gardens. There will be a memorial mass on Saturday, November 2, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church with Father Christopher Roberts officiating. Arrangements were entrusted to the College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 4601 South Western Avenue, Marion, Indiana 46953.
