William "Bill" D. Sherer

January 26, 1931 ~ September 21, 2019 (age 88)

William D. "Bill" Sherer, 88, of Marion, left his home on this earth for his heavenly home Saturday, September 21, 2019, at Colonial Oaks Healthcare Center, Marion, Indiana.

Bill was born January 26, 1931, at Hampton, Iowa, to the late William J. and Leona Mae (Rhutasel) Sherer. His formative years were spent in Iowa and there he was a graduate from Chapin High School in 1949. Bill was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He married the love of his life, Freda M. Ream, on June 21, 1968, at Grant Wesleyan Church, in Grant, Michigan. Bill and Freda spent 51 precious years walking through life hand in hand, raising a family and opening their hearts and home to everyone they met.

Bill had a kind, gentle spirit about him. His life genuinely reflected the verse Matthew 28:19-20. Bill wanted everyone around him to know and love Jesus. Referred to by many as "Grandpa Bill", it was his mission in life to lead people to Christ, especially children. He would always be the first to give the shirt off of his back, and he was always armed with a good joke. Bill never knew a stranger and everyone was always welcomed at his dinner table. Though his work on this earth is complete, his legacy will continue to live on for generations through the lives he touched.

Bill was a member of Nelson Street Wesleyan Church, Marion. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. He was also a member of the American Legion. Bill loved spending time camping and riding horses. He appreciated the craftsmanship and design of the automobile and retired from General Motors (Traffic Office) in 1991.

Survivors include his wife, Freda; daughters, Melody Sherer, Houston, TX, and Dalene Halt, FL; a son-in-law, Rick Halt, Marion; grandchildren, Cory (Kassandre) Sherer, Ft. Wayne, IN, Miranda (Damion) Sterling, Houston, TX, and Dustin (Christina) Shelton, Fruitland Park, FL; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Lois (George) Schuler, Dows, IA; and a brother, Duane Sherer, Marion, IN.

He is preceded in death by two granddaughters, Danialle and Dasha Shelton; a sister, Lavonne H. Grice; and two brothers, Howard and John "Jack" Sherer.

Funeral arrangements for Bill have been entrusted to College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 4601 S. Western Avenue, Marion, Indiana 46953.

There will be a celebration of Bill's life held on Thursday, September 26, 2019. The visitation for the family to receive friends and family will be from 2:00 pm-4:00 pm, with a funeral service commencing at 4:00 pm, with Pastor Don Glenn and Pastor John Wrightsman officiating.  Both of these services for Bill will be held at Nelson Street Wesleyan Church, 1502 W. Nelson Street, Marion, IN 46952.

Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Bill to Nelson Street Wesleyan Church, 1502 W. Nelson Street, Marion, Indiana 46952.
