The Family of Charles (Charlie) LeRoy Sloderbeck are saddened to announce his passing on June 26, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Heart Center in Carmel, IN.
Charlie was born to Lester and Mabel (Terry) Sloderbeck on August 22, 1932, in Allegan, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Darlene J. Sloderbeck (Campbell), his mother and father, his only brother, Frank Sloderbeck; Frank's wife, Ruby Sloderbeck, and their son Rex Sloderbeck.
Charlie and Darlene met while working together at the Indiana Theater where Darlene sold tickets and concessions and Charlie was an usher. They married on May 19, 1956 and welcomed 5 children into their lives: Kim Sue Stephan & Richard, and blended family Kara S(Lyle) Grose and Marc P Griffin; Brad Leroy Sloderbeck & Angel, and their blended family Brandon, Ryan and Heather; Angela Kay Kirby and her daughters Amber(Andrew) and Alissa (Clio); Keith James Sloderbeck & Mary, and their children Megan Stroup(Jake), Cody Sloderbeck(Caterina), Seth Sloderbeck, and Kyle Sloderbeck(Megan); and the youngest of Charlie and Darlene's brood, David Joe Sloderbeck & Leann, and their blended family, Joshua Sloderbeck, Chelsea N Sloderbeck, Brian Abbott and Andrea Abbott. Charlie was also very proud to have 27 Great-Grandchildren. Charlie also had a couple of close friends that would watch TV with him or take him out to eat, Rolland Street and Dennis Faulstitch.
Charlie was employed at Dana Corporation in Marion, IN for 42 years. After he retired, he never sat still for long. He stayed busy playing bingo and euchre at the Marion Senior Center, the Moose Lodge in Gas City. He always bragged about "playing a loner". He always was happy to share his bingo prizes with members of his family. He liked to win, but he enjoyed the fellowship and he talked to everyone he met.
Charlie's real love, after his wife and family, was Marion Giants sports, so much so that he has held season tickets for basketball and football games since he was 16 years old. He was a member of the Booster Club, and after he retired from Dana, he kept score for the Giant's Baseball Team. He instilled his love of sports into his sons, and he coached T-Ball from the first year it started at Marion PAL Club. It was not unusual for him to get a neighborhood pick-up game of basketball going at the family's regulation height basketball hoop. He also enjoyed cheering for the Indianapolis Colts, Pacer's Basketball and Fever Women's Basketball. He also attended several IHSAA Boys Basketball Tournament games and Indiana-Kentucky All Star Basketball games.
Charlie loved to play, but he was also a serious man that loved the Lord. This year was the 50th year that Charlie had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Marion, IN. He was an usher for all of those years, volunteered and served the Lord faithfully.
Arrangements for Charlie have been entrusted to the College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 4601 South Western Avenue, Marion, Indiana 46953. There will be a Celebration of Charlie's Life on August 1, 2026, at 1 PM, at the First Baptist Church, 403 W 4th St, Marion, IN 46952.
