Charles "Earl" Clock, 81, passed away peacefully at home on May 3rd, 2023. Earl was born at home on the family farm in rural Fairmount, Indiana on November 27th, 1941, to Arvel and Charlene Clock. As a young child, Earl and his older brother Larry would often get into many adventures together on the farm, including once getting caught trying to push their pet pony up the stairs of the house to their bedrooms. Earl graduated from Jefferson High School in 1959, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Jill. They began dating early in high school, and he would often drive his tractor into Upland just to see her, before he had his driver's license. In high school, Earl excelled in the sport of track, and was particularly good in the high hurdles. He won many track meets, and held the school record in hurdles at Jefferson High School. He attended Taylor University for one year and ran on the university's track team; however, after a year of college, the farm was calling him back home. Earl and his high school sweetheart Jill (Thompson) Clock were married on April 20th, 1963. He worked for Delco Remy in Anderson for over 30 years, and would often come home from work at 4pm, eat an early supper, and spend the rest of the evening working on the farm. He was a proud workaholic, and often said that when he and Jill were married, they decided that he would make the money, and she would spend it. For many years, he raised hogs, cattle, and farmed, alongside his full-time job in Anderson. After retirement from General Motors, Earl still devoted his days to the farm, and was particularly proud of his Angus cattle and his collection of antique John Deere tractors. In 2009, his wife Jill was dealt a devastating blow with the loss of her leg after a fall, and in 2017 she was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a rare degenerative brain disease. For many years, Earl devoted his life to taking care of Jill during these difficult times. Although life seemed impossibly unfair at times, Earl and Jill relied on their faith and their commitment to each other throughout this time. After Jill's death in 2019, Earl missed her every day of his life, and often said he was ready to see her again as he dealt with pulmonary fibrosis and heart failure, which limited his activity greatly in his last years. It is a great comfort to know they are now reunited in Heaven. Earl attended Grant Church, and enjoyed going to gospel concerts, attending livestock shows, and watching IU basketball games. He had a great love of music, especially gospel and country music. He was a generous, stubborn, and principled man, and his children and grandchildren will miss him terribly. Earl is survived by three daughters, Amy (Todd) Marshall of Bentonville, Arkansas, Andrea Fitzgerald of Fairmount, Indiana, and Jennifer (Jared) Jarck of Fairmount, Indiana. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Holyn (Louis) Kissinger, Hayden Marshall, Brody and Bryce Fitzgerald, and Hayley and Andrew Jarck. He is also survived by a cousin, Joe (Roberta) Evans, who Earl loved like a son, and their children Justin Evans and Erica (Dane) Cook, who he loved like his grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Arvel and Charlene Clock, and his wife, Jill. Arrangements have been entrusted to Armes-Hunt Funeral Home in Fairmount, Indiana. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 7th, from 4-6 pm. A funeral service will also be held at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home on Monday, May 8th, at 11 am. Burial will follow at Matthews Cemetery. Contributions made in memory of Earl can be made to Grant Church.
