Hilda Jane Payne

Hilda Jane Payne, beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and poet, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on June 22, 1940, in Hilham, Tennessee, Hilda dedicated her life to nurturing the minds and spirits of children. She proudly served as a preschool teacher for ten years, retiring from Heritage Christian School in Garfield, New Jersey. Throughout her teaching career, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to her students, sharing her love for learning and creativity.

Hilda found joy in simple pleasures-gardening and exploring thrift stores were among her favorite pastimes. Yet, nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with her cherished grandson, John Yunker. Hilda's poetic soul allowed her to express her thoughts and emotions through her written works, many of which were published in the National Library of Poetry.

A faithful believer in God, Hilda was a devoted member of Liberty Baptist Church in Sweetser, where she found strength and community in her faith. Her warmth, kindness, and radiant spirit touched the lives of all who knew her, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.

Hilda is survived by her daughters, Jama Harmon and Pamela; granddaughter, Richele (Jonathan) Jones; and great-grandson, John Yunker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlie Gaw and Martha Lee.

In accordance with Hilda's wishes, no services will be held.
