John F. Carpenter, 93, of Fairmount, died on Tuesday July 16, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Kokomo.
John was born on November 1, 1930, son of the late Martin C. Carpenter and Marcille Owens Carpenter Weaver. John graduated from Summitville High School in 1948 where he was an athlete competing in basketball, and baseball. He held the Madison County Highest scoring record in Basketball. John continued his love of sports by coaching the varsity Madison-Grant Girls Basketball for 3 years, the Madison-Grant JV softball for 20 years winning the 2A State Championship in 2009, as well as Little League Baseball winning the Town and Country in the 1969 State Championship. John faithfully served his country from 1951-1953 in the Army. He was a 42 year employee of Delco Electronics in Kokomo. John grew up at the Summitville United Methodist Church and as an adult at Point Isabel United Methodist Church. John was a member of the American Legion Post 313. He was a kind and loving family man, and will be missed dearly.
John is survived by his loving wife of 70 Years, Etna "Jane" (Wimmer) Carpenter. They were married on August 14, 1953. Also surviving are John and Jane's three children, Malinda (Jim) Bricker, Amboy, Kim (Jay) Dunlap, Summitville, Scott (Mellissa) Carpenter, Fairmount; step-brothers, Billy Carpenter and Bobby Weaver; 15 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Marcille Carpenter, grandson, Michael Dunlap; and sister, Doris (John) Webster.
Services for John have been entrusted to the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration funeral home and Cremation Services, 415 South Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana were visitation will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., then on Saturday, July 20, 2024, there will be a funeral held at 11:00 A.M., with Pastors Ron Meyer and Brock Meyer officiating, and military honors. Burial will immediately follow at Vinson Cemetery in Summitville.
