John Halstead Jessup, a beloved husband, father, and farmer, peacefully passed away on Friday, January 19, 2024, at the age of 91. Born on April 3, 1932, in Fairmount, Indiana, John was the son of the late Donald and Elizabeth Jessup.
John's passion for farming was evident throughout his life. After graduating from Fairmount High School in 1950, he attended Purdue University for a year before serving his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict. John's dedication and bravery were showcased as he served as a tank gunner for 16 months. Following his military service, he married the love of his life, Kay E. Hacker, on Christmas Eve in 1954, sharing an incredible journey together for nearly 70 years.
Throughout his career, John's heart remained in farming. He worked tirelessly on his own farm, and also ventured into farm equipment sales, representing The Ford Tractor and Implement Operations, a Division of Ford Motor Company. His exceptional sales qualities were recognized in 1972 when he was awarded "Salesman of the Year" and was rewarded with a special trip. John's commitment to the agricultural industry was further demonstrated by his involvement in the Agriculture Department and the "Old" Big R. As a former State FFA Officer, he remained a steadfast supporter of FFA, and in 1952, was honored as the "Farmer of the Year" by the National Future Farmers of America organization. Additionally, John embarked on various entrepreneurial endeavors, including selling Jewel T China out of his van, creating memorable experiences and encounters with prominent individuals such as President LBJ, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and Carol Channing.
John's faith played an integral role in his life. A dedicated member of the Fowlerton United Methodist Church, he contributed his time and knowledge by teaching Sunday School and leading Bible studies for many years. In his leisure, he cherished moments spent with his grandchildren, indulged in challenging word search puzzles, and had a special affection for pets.
John will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He is survived by his devoted wife Kay, their three children: Susan (Bruce) Banker, Linda Pettigrew, and Jean (Chuck) Cohenour. The legacy of John's kindness and warmth lives on through his six grandchildren: Anna (Tim) Chastain, Craig Banker, Christina Benefiel, Curtis (Jennifer) Banker, Lindsay Cooksey, and Logan Pettigrew. He also leaves behind six great-grandchildren: Daniel Chastain, Abram Banker, Charlotte Benefiel, Silas Benefiel, Elizabeth Banker, and Abigail Banker.
