Joseph E. Payton passed away peacefully at Colonial Oaks on June 24, 2026.
Joseph was born on December 14, 1942, to the late Joseph and Marie (Gregory) Payton. He attended Fairfield High School before graduating with the Class of 1960 in Leesburg, Ohio. He continued his education at Marion College, earning his bachelors degree in education in 1966.
On June 5, 1965, Joseph married the love of his life, Janice ( Lindley) Payton, and together they shared 61 years of marriage.
Joseph was a teacher at Fairmount Junior High School for four years, teaching social studies. He dedicated 33 years of service to General Motors. He was also a faithful member of Lakeview Wesleyan Church and Chapel Pike Wesleyan Church. He took great pride in caring for the grounds at Lakeview Wesleyan Church, where he mowed the lawns for 30 years.
In his free time, Joseph found joy in gardening and collecting farm toys. He appreciated the simple pleasures of life and treasured the time he spent with his family.
Joseph is lovingly remembered by his wife, Janice Payton; his daughters, Lori (Wilbur) Webb, Amy Roby; and grandsons, Mason (Kelli Lorah) Webb and Alex Webb.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services for Joseph have been entrusted to the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana. A funeral service celebrating Joseph's life will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 1 p.m., with visitation from 11 to 1 p.m. before the service. Burial will follow at Park Cemetery with
memorial contributions be made to donor's choice.
