Julia R Carter

October 4, 1918 — November 15, 2021

Julia Winifred (Riley) Carter, 103, went to be with the Lord on November 15, 2021, at Colonial Oaks Healthcare. Julia was born on October 4, 1918, in Phlox, Indiana, to Irvin and Bessie (Fox) Riley, the fifth of their seven children. After graduating from Union Bible Seminary, Westfield, Indiana, Julia married E. Barton Carter, who preceded her in death in November 2000. They served together in ministry in Indiana and Arkansas prior to Barton's change of careers, which led them to Marion in 1962 when he accepted the position of General Treasurer of The Wesleyan Methodist Church. A devoted mother, when faced with an empty nest in 1968 Julia accepted the position of secretary to the Dean of Students at Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University), where she worked for 20 years, impacting the lives of untold numbers of students whom she took under her wing. She had also been a substitute teacher and an editorial assistant. Julia loved to travel, entertain, paint, read, write, and work crossword puzzles. She was a member of College Wesleyan Church and affiliated with Marion Philharmonic Friends, Mississinewa Valley Band Boosters, and Republican Women, among other causes. A lifelong student, Julia's keen mind long recalled the Greek alphabet she learned in her teens, as well as many memorized scriptures. Her writer's mind infused words with grace and meaning, her musician's ear thrilled to melodious sound, and her artist's eye focused on beauty everywhere. Julia outlived her parents and her siblings, Marjorie, twins Richard and Rachel, Eunice, Rebecca, and Joseph. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by granddaughter Natalie York. Survivors include sons Geoffrey and Brian Carter, and daughter Anne (Roger) Bainbridge, as well as 6 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Arrangements for Julia have been entrusted to College Park Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 4601 South Western Avenue, Marion, Indiana 46953, where on Sunday, November 21, 2021, there will be a visitation held from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., with the funeral service beginning at 4:00 P.M., with Pastors Alex Mandura and Howard Castle officiating. A private burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park on Monday. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Julia to Gideons International, Marion Camp, P.O.
