Marilyn Porter

Marilyn Joyce Porter, 82, of Upland died May 22, 2025 at the University Nursing Center in Upland where she had been a resident since earlier this year following a fall at her home. She was born on August 15, 1942, in Hartford City to Clarence and Doris Porter. Marilyn was joined later by a sister, Mary Alice, and a brother John Paul.


Marilyn graduated from Jefferson Township High School in 1960 with "The 50 of 60". She attended Taylor University for two years before graduating in 1965 from the Indiana University Medical School in Indianapolis with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Marilyn was a medical missionary nurse in Kenya Africa for four years. She loved children. After returning to The United States, Marilyn worked in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Marion General Hospital for over 30 years. After retiring from the hospital, she cared for Gerald and Christian Mugera who were the loves of her life.

She was a life member and active in the Upland Friends Church. She was active in the missions program of the church and the United Society of Friends Women (USFW) at the state and national levels.


Marilyn was predeceased in death by her father, Clarence Porter, in 1980 and her mother, Doris Porter, in 2000, and her cousin Laura Louise (Porter) Bartlett.

She is survived by her sister Mary Alice (Porter) Said of Upland, her brother John P. (Mary) Porter of Upland, her nieces Margo (Aaron) Panfili of Upland, Kathryn (Justin) Drapeau of Boulder CO, Diane Chalfant of Hartford City, and her nephew Nathan (Clarissa) Porter of Greensboro NC.


She is also survived by her cousins Edith Felchle, George (Rose) Porter, and David (Jeanie) Wilson as well as her beloved great nieces and nephews and her special friends Drs. Charles and Kabuia Mugera and their sons Gerald and Christian.

The family will receive visitors from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. on May 28, 2025, at the Upland Friends Church, 1111 S Main St Upland, IN 46989. Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Marilyn's life will begin at 2:00 P.M. with Curt Blasiman presiding. Burial will take place at the Jefferson Cemetery.


The family thanks the staff of University Nursing Center Memory Care in Upland and Heart to Heart Hospice for the care given to our sister during this time of transition.
