Roger Stephens

July 5, 1949 — June 19, 2025

Roger L. Stephens, 75, of, Wabash, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2025, with his loving family by his side. Born on July 5, 1949, in Lackey, Kentucky, Roger was the son of the late Gaylord and Maudie (Smith) Stephens.

A proud graduate of Wabash High School, Class of 1967, Roger answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. His time in the military shaped his lifelong values of discipline, service, and dedication. On February 19, 1977 he married April Stephens, and she survives.

Following his honorable service, Roger began a long and respected career at the Defense Logistics Agency in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he worked as a supervisor for 35 years. His commitment and expertise earned him a prestigious award in coding and munitions-a testament to his hard work and leadership.

In retirement, Roger embraced his favorite role of all: Pawpaw. He poured his heart into making unforgettable memories with his grandchildren, taking them on adventures near and far-from the wonders of London and the rugged beauty of the American West to the charm of Canada. He lived fully by his motto, "Never say I wish I would have."

He was known not only for his generosity, but for his giant strawberries grown in his backyard patch, and the sparkle he brought to life-whether through the "diamonds" he delighted in giving his grandkids or the unwavering support he showed his family. He was instrumental in helping his granddaughter launch her dance studio, Dance Through Him in Upland, Indiana, which continues to thrive today.

In his honor, the Stephens Scholarship has been established to continue his legacy of support, encouragement, and love for future generations.

Roger is survived by his wife April Stephens, of Wabash; children, Katie (Mike) Freeburn of VanBuren, Robert Stephens of Wabash; grandchildren, Jordan Freeburn, Brianna (Zach) Chaffin, Imajen Freeburn, Carleigh Freeburn; great grandchild, Owen Chaffin; siblings, Bobby Stephens, and Phyllis Hill; special nephew, Rick (Kris) Stephens; extended family, Becky (Dennis) Spenelli, Mike (Jaime) Groleau; honorary grandchildren, Abby Spenelli, Chelsy Wagley, Taylor Groleau, Lyndsie Hantz.
