Listen to Obituary

Sandra S. Engle, age 85, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis. Born on June 21, 1940, to the late Charles Skinner and Oda Jean Shane, Sandy's early life was shaped by the love of her mother and her step-father, James Shane, after the passing of her father when she was just a baby.

A proud member of the Fairmount High School class of 1958, Sandy embarked on a journey marked by love and commitment when she married Larry Engle on March 1, 1959, in a heartfelt ceremony at the Friends Church in Fairmount. Together, they shared a life filled with adventure and companionship, until Larry's passing on July 29, 2012.

Sandy pursued her passion for learning at Marion Business College and dedicated several years of her life to serving as the Grant County Prosecutor's secretary, where her attention to detail and organizational skills were invaluable. A woman of vibrant interests, Sandy found joy in the pages of mystery and romance novels; a good book could sweep her away, revealing her love for stories that captured the nuances of life.

Her zest for life was equally expressed through her beloved golf cart rides around town and the cherished motorcycle adventures shared with Larry. Whether it was gambling at the casino with her Harley friends or cheering passionately for her favorite teams-the Indiana University Hoosiers and the Indianapolis Colts-Sandy embraced moments that brought joy and excitement.

Sandy is survived by her daughter, Jody (Terry) Spahr; grandchildren, Larra (Allen) Harrison, Sidney (Ashley) Spahr, and Austin (Nicole) and Griffin (Betsy) Engle; great-grandchildren, Emmaleigh (Patrick) Lloyd and Evan and Emberly Spahr; great-great-grandchildren, Julian Haney, Eli Engle, and one on the way; sister, Sheila (John) Voight, Lexington, Kentucky; sisters-in-law, Barbara Engle, Jayne Skinner, and Sherry Engle; lifelong friend who was like a brother, Sparky Mitchener, Fairmount; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, too numerous to mention.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles; mother and step-father, Oda and James; husband, Larry; son, Vincent Engle; siblings, Charles (Joyce) and Jack Skinner, and Tim (Beverly) Shane; and brother-in-law, Max Engle.

Arrangements for Sandy have been entrusted to the Fairmount chapel of Armes-Hunt Life Celebration Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Park Cemetery in Fairmount.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the National Down Syndrome Society or to the National Autism Association.
