William Martin Gillespie Sr.

March 28, 1935 — August 30, 2023

William Martin Gillespie, 88, of Marion, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, after a brief illness.


William was born on March 28, 1935, to George and Lura Gillespie, in Owingsville, Kentucky. He met Phyllis Vinson and the two wed in 1955, going on to have three children, Sheila, William (Bill) Jr, and Keith.


William retired, in 1991, from RCA/Thompson in Marion, Indiana, after 32 years. During retirement he enjoyed spending time riding his motorcycle on long trips and horseback riding with his many friends. He enjoyed life to the fullest and will be deeply missed by those who loved him.


William is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, four sisters, and an infant granddaughter.


He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Phyllis Gillespie, one sister Lorena Pettit, Sharpsburg, KY, one daughter Sheila (David) Shank, Marion, IN, two sons Bill (Theresa) Gillespie, Crystal River, FL, and Keith (Stephanie) Gillespie, Marion, IN, Eight grandchildren, Gordon Hood, III, Trenton Gillespie, Dustin Gillespie, Taylor (Ryan) Tobin, Travis Gillespie, Brandon (Bethany) Gillespie, Nicolas (Morgan) Morrison, Danielle Morrison and seven great grandchildren.


Arrangements for William have been entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 259 North Main Street, Upland, Indiana 46898. The family will have a private burial at a later date.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
