Velma R. Jones

December 28, 1937 - May 17, 2020

Velma Ruth Jones, 82, passed away Sunday, May 17 at Northview Health in Anderson, Indiana.

Velma was born December 28, 1937, to the late Lurie (Copeland) Buckner and Henry Buckner in Monterey, Tennessee. Velma spent her childhood in Monterey with her brothers and sisters, then at the age of 19 she bravely decided to move to Anderson, Indiana, coming by herself on the Greyhound bus. Her early days in Anderson in the late 1950s saw her working as a waitress in different cafes in town, including the Rancho Grande. She enjoyed making friends there and listening to the jukebox, especially her favorite song at the time, Dont be Cruel by Elvis Presley.

In the 60s she met and married James T. Jones and started a family, and thus began her career as a wonderful mother and housekeeper. First came Sheila Diane, then Teresa Joyce, followed later by Brenda Kay and finally Angela Marie. In 1972 the family relocated from Anderson to the Fairmount area, where she lived in Fowlerton for 35 years until moving to Prairie View apartments in Fairmount.

Velma always took the time to be a caring and loving mom to her daughters, kept the house clean as a whistle, and made holidays and birthdays each year so special. At the same time, she rarely wanted anything for herself. If she did, you can be sure it was a cd or book, because she loved music and reading. Among her favorites were Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, all the old classic country stars, books of all kinds but especially Amish themes, or her very favorite, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and her two favorite songs, Imagine by John Lennon, and Turn,Turn, Turn by The Byrds. On TV she loved to watch The Golden Girls, RFD TV, The Waltons, and TCM or Hallmark Movies. She also rarely went a weekday without catching up on the news and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

She loved going to garage sales and always looked forward to the annual Fairmount town rummage. She loved to laugh and play games, especially our Christmas game and gag gift party. She also very much enjoyed the yearly trip to visit family in Tennessee. There is not enough room here to write all of the things that Velma loved about life, but just enough to write that she was the kindest, gentlest soul you could ever meet.

Survivors include children, Angie Jones and husband Alex Groth, Indianapolis, Brenda Jones and partner Doug Rowland, Summitville, and Teresa McDonnell and husband Thom McDonnell, Noblesville; grandchildren, Michaela Williams, Summitville, and Dan (Brittany) Savage, Marion; four great-grandchildren; brother, Donnie (Carolyn) Buckner and sister, Jo Phillips, both of Monterey, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by daughter, Sheila Jones; brother, George L.D Buckner; sister, Elise Leggett; brother-in-law, Clyde Phillips; and other family members and friends that she loved.

The Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 South Main Street, has been entrusted with the arrangements for Velma.
